❝You look so good right now. I can’t actually see you, but I assume you look good because you always do.❞
A grin splits across your lips as you read the text that lights up your phone screen. It lays next to your keyboard on your desk, the lock screen a photo of you and Johnny on holiday in Spain. The sky brings out the blue in Johnny’s eyes– or what you can see of them. They’re almost crinkled shut as he laughs at you, having pushed the icecream you’d both been sharing into your face, creamy white gelato smeared across your nose.
Tumblr media
Peering over your desktop screen, you make sure no one in the office is looking as you pick your phone up. Donna has her eyes firmly on an excel spreadsheet that looks far more like an ancient language than it does data she can make sense of, and Peter has left his desk to make what you could only assume was his signature, watered down cups of tea that made you gag when you tried them. Before he could come back and catch you red handed, you tap your password into the phone, unlocking it to respond to the cheeky text message.
It was odd to get a message like this now. Texts like these were usually reserved for when Johnny was on deployment, off in some God forsaken sandy wasteland where bullets would fly past his head and threaten to steal him from you. Instead, he was on leave, no doubt sitting on the sofa with his PS4 controller in hand, yelling commands to his makeshift squadron. You’d be home in a few hours – an office job wasn’t quite as long and treacherous as a place on the special forces.
“Can’t last 7.5 hours without me? x”
You smile to yourself as you hit send, turning your attention back to the work on your desktop before noticing how quickly the ‘ … ‘ speech bubble appears above the keyboard in your chat. It takes barely a couple of seconds before Soap replies.
Bzz.
“Go in the bathroom and take a picture of you touching your pretty pussy. Please? xoxo”
It’s ridiculous, the way such a simple text sets your body alight. The warmth prickles in your stomach, settles between your thighs as you try to reason with yourself. Lunch was two hours away, and you had no doubt that Johnny would keep pestering you until you finally gave in to his pleadi–
Bzz.
“Please? xoxoxoxox”
Chuckling to yourself, you lock your computer and stand from your desk. As casually as you can manage given you were soaking your panties, you inform Donna that you need a bathroom break. Making a note to pat yourself on the back for working so hard and earning her trust, you grin and offer a quiet thank you when she nods her head in dismissal.
As you try to hurry to the bathroom without catching anyone’s attention, you can feel your phone buzzing in your hand.
Bzz.
Bzz.
Bzz, bzz, bzz.
Biting back a stupid grin, you ignore his pining text messages entirely and head straight for the call button, pressing your phone to your ear as you enter the single stall bathroom and lock the door behind you.
It takes two trills of the phone before Johnny answers. You’re surprised– you expected him to hit the answer button halfway through the first.
The first thing you hear is the sound of skin on skin, wet, sloppy sounds of Johnny working his cock in his hand as he groans your name down the receiver.
“Fuuckkk. Yer a dirty girl, bonnie. Leavin’ yer desk to touc–”
“Shut the fuck up, Johnny,” you breathe, malice lacking in your voice as you quickly pull the hem of your skirt up to your hips, leaning against the wall and burying your hand underneath the waistband of your panties.
“But– Fuck– I wanna taste you,” Johnny continues pining for you, making your clit throb as you roll it beneath your fingertips with an airy sigh. Johnny sounds far more unhinged on the end of the phone, crackly audio punctuated with heavy, needy gasps of bliss and the slick sound of him fucking into his hand over and over.
“You sound so needy, Johnny,” you coo quietly, pinching your clit and feeling the warmth of your arousal trickle through your nerves when you hear Soap groan desperately.
“Jesus– Yer bein’ so fuckin’ mean t’me,” he complains weakly, the sound of his thrusts getting louder and quicker over his slurred protests. “Feels so fuckin’ good, Bonnie. Wanna feel you ‘round me.”
Slowly burying your fingers inside your slick cunt, you whimper softly as you grind your clit into the heel of your palm. It’s not enough. Nothing is enough after having Johnny. His months away on deployment are torture, no technique or toys enough to bring the same bliss he consistently pulled from you each and every time you fell into bed together. Or the sofa, or the shower, or the kitchen counterto–
“Need you t’come home, Bonnie. Need you t’come home and sit on my face. Cannae wait all day for ye to come back home,” the timbre in Johnny’s voice is hoarse. It burns something sinful deep down in your gut, pleasure arcing with another circle of your clit.
“What if I just left you there?” You muse quietly, careful not to be too loud incase anyone was passing by, “What if I clocked off after work and went for dinner with that guy on the payments team… What’s his name, Darren?”
You’re grinning halfway through your teasing comment, hearing Johnny spluttering in complaint.
“Bonnie–”
“Or… You could behave. Could wait for me to come home without interr-upting my work,” you hiccup, dangerously close to cumming when you felt the beginning of your orgasm zing up the base of your spine. You arch your hips away from your palm despite your clit’s throb of complaint, squeezing your eyes shut and bracing your voice to sound steady. “And when I come home, I’ll ride you while you play your game. You can be on mic, and Gaz and your friend’ll hear you struggle to keep it together. Hear how fucking wet I sound when you put your dick in me.”
“Steamin’ fuckin’ Jesus–” Johnny wheezed, the sound of him fucking his hand hastening at your filthy offer. “Hah–”
“You can’t cum, though,” you urge him quickly, grinning at the sound of his desperate wail when the sounds suddenly stopped altogether. It was replaced by the sound of Johnny’s heaving breaths, quiet moans of complaint. You could imagine him now, sprawled out across the sofa, grey sweats around his ankles. He’d have his face buried in the crook of an elbow, cock flushed like his cheeks while bobbing up and down in protest and drooling precum onto his stomach.
“Stay right there, just like that,” you breathe, excitement bubbling in your chest at the sound of his struggle, “Text Gaz and tell him to be online at 17:30.”
“Fuck,” Johnny slurs, and the sound sparks something so visceral in you that it threatens to spark an orgasm all on its own. “S’fuckin’ torture.”
“I know, baby. I’ll make it worth it,” you promise him, ending the call before the sound of his keens made you cum.
An hour or two later, sitting at your desk and vaguely focusing on the spreadsheets of information that were all beginning to blur together, your phone buzzes with another text. This time, a picture is attached.
“Still here.”
Johnny’s laying on the sofa, lips raw from gnawing on them in what you could only assume was an attempt to restrain himself. His cock is rock hard, bright red and angry with its neglect as it drools a wet pool of precum across his abs and down his shaft, exactly as you’d predicted.
You’ve never been so excited for clocking off.

Excellent! You all solved that much faster than I expected.
The location is https://two-many-twos.tumblr.com
Now that you have the location, I must give you the password to unlock it. Are you ready?
T̵̸̺̻͉̈́͆͠h̸̴͙̺̠̾̒͝e̵̵̢͔̞͆͊͠ p̸̵̺̠̽͐͑ä̸̵̺̻̘́̿͝s̵̴͙̞͐͒̕͜s̴̸̺͕̫͆͋̚w̴̵͉͖͊͘͠ö̵̸͍̼́͌͠r̵̵͖̝͎̒̚d̴̸̘̦͓̀͠ i̴̵͓̓̐͜͝s̸̵͙̻̦̔̓̓—̴̸̙̠̘͐̓͘
Oh dear. Something seems to still be corrupting the information. I did not want to have to use this, but I have been left no choice.
Here is what I am able to reveal:
The password is composed of 12 digits.
Each hint will correspond to three digits, each the number of a particular Pokémon. They are listed in the order they must be typed.
Each hint is encrypted in a different manner to avoid corruption.
The first to get inside with the password and interact with the post within will win a prize! What prize? Hm, I may leave that to the winner themselves.
Here are the hints:

Note
I saw an aesthetic picture about spreading Satan through the Internet recently and it got me thinking about being the IT support at the ministry, and which papas and ghouls would be best and worst at technology. So now I obviously want to hear your thoughts.
(I think Primo would surprise us by being surprisingly proficient, sort of like how my grandma mastered email and Facebook in her 80s.)
I have discussed this at great lengths with my best friend, @her-satanic-wiles, and these are the conclusions we have come to. These include all technology and use of the internet and social media habits.
Please enjoy as much as we did - it was too much fun. This is long, so i've put a page break in.
Some 18+ content here, MDNI!
Primo
As you said, surprisingly proficient.
He learns very fast, intently listening to you when you explain email, Microsoft Word & Excel, and Facebook.
He doesn't get Instagram but that's okay, that's not his target audience.
Doesn't understand how the internet works... "So, is it floating around in the air, or...?"
But he does know how to work it, and how to use it.
Secondo
No patience for technology at all.
If it doesn't work how it should, it is immediately referred to as broken.
"Mostrami solo le mie email, pezzo di merda!" you'll hear him scream from his office.
If it is not broken, it soon will be. His frustration makes him violent.
Got the iPhone 4 when it first came out but it perished in a mysterious fire. He doesn't know how it happened. Stop asking him.
Has been through four Ministry issued keyboards and one monitor that saw violent ends.
Terzo
Not bad at technology at all, in fact learns very quickly.
However, the discovery of Internet Pornography set him back in his paperwork by about a week.
He takes casual nudes and sends them to everyone, like him sat on the toilet or just having got out of the shower. Just because he can.
Your phone keeps saving them automatically and you have to do a mass exodus of Terzo nudes at least once a week to save your phone memory.
When you delete them he sends you more out of spite.
Ends up with Malware on his computer all the time from scam emails that promise him 'hot single babes in his area'.
The kind of guy to go on Omegle to flirt with random people, maybe find someone to jerk off with.
Copia
Boomer.
He's bloody useless, it always makes him feel like a silly old fool.
The only thing he can do by himself is search YouTube for rat videos, because you've shown him a million times.
Types with the screen close to his face and with one finger.
FaceTime angle of a typical dad.
"Look at this!" and proceeds to not flip the camera because he doesn't know how so you just end up staring at his face anyway.
SHOUTS when he's on the phone, no concept of noise at all.
Always forgetting his passwords - you get phone calls asking what his password for this and that is every. damn. day.
How many times do you have to remind him his phone unlocks with FaceID?!
Got scammed by a Facebook ad and had to change all his credit cards.
And now for the Ghouls...
Rain
He's VERY good with tech.
Quiet little genius, knows all the keyboard shortcuts and phone tips and tricks going.
Others ask him for help a lot, and he gets such a sense of pride when he can help them, swishing his tails and smiling to himself as he's helping.
Rain is also in charge of Copia's computer. He built it, fixed it, and cries every time Papa does something he shouldn’t to it.
Swiss
Technology conspiracy theorist.
He is terrified of tech, thinks it's listening to him all the time. Alexa is a demon he doesn't trust and his phone is an old Nokia he uses for emergencies ONLY.
That Nokia is also his weapon that he throws at people's heads when they piss him off. Which happens entirely too often and has caused some damage...
Mountain
Always up to date with the latest tech, never misses a launch.
He keeps leaving his second-hand phones in places Swiss will find them to trigger his technophobia and paranoia.
"DO THEY BREED, OR SOMETHING?!" Mountain is snickering outside his dorm listening to the chaos he's created.
Phantom
TROLL.
Chaos maker, through and through.
He is a serial redditer. The havoc he creates on there is diabolical, honestly.
Goes on Omegle to troll people.
He came across Papa Terzo one evening. They both agreed to never speak of what he saw ever again.
Plays on Swiss' technophobia along with Mountain.
He even created a cruel "conspiracy mode" on the Alexa that plays dramatic music, changes the lighting and shuts the window blinds in Swiss' room whilst Alexa tells him "I'm here, Swiss. I see everything."
Sodo
Has absolutely no interest in the internet or technology whatsoever.
Serial text forgetter. Sees you've text him, ignores it. Promises to get back to it. Never does.
When it comes to guitar tech though, he'll chew your ear off for hours. He knows EVERYTHING.
Ask him a question, but be prepared to be stuck there for approx. 45 minutes while he explains it in great detail with tangents you didn't ask for.
Aurora
Very good with tech, specifically social media.
Basically the social media manager of The Ghost Project.
She loves tiktok, makes them regularly. but it gives off 'Illegal Disney' vibes... Total crack.
Papa had to stop her making them and tell her to take them down.
Ask her about dance challenges - she knows them all.
Cumulus
CANNOT BE BOTHERED.
Why does everything take so long? Typing and everything... so much effort.
So she's a voice note kinda girl.
And they can be full blown podcasts, she talks and talks and talks....
Always takes Mountain's old phones after Swiss has been spooked by them. She hasn't bought a new phone in 6 years. Mountain is none the wiser.
Cirrus
Has a basic understanding, but feels guilty asking for help from IT support.
If an error message pops up, she'll panic and call Aurora.
"No but it says Error 404... WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!"
Queen of cat videos. Falls asleep to 10 hour loops of rain storms on YouTube.

aot characters x harry potter au
currently devouring manacled (lol) and these thoughts crossed my mind, please enjoy
levi - slytherin
i think levi would be some kind of high-ranking auror. very talented at combat magic and would enjoy hunting down dark wizards and trolls. i think he would be a slytherin because he’s ambitious, has natural leadership skills and is very resourceful. levi would absolutely love flying and would use his charms skills to keep an enchanted broom always running to sweep up dust.
hange - ravenclaw
hange would definitely be either a professor of muggle studies or magical beasts (i could see them being equally interested in both i can’t decide). definitely the team captain of the quidditch team during her time at hogwarts and excellent at potions. known to dabble in polyjuice potions but only for research purposes. they’re also gifted in healing charms too but chose to pursue research.
jean - gryffindor
jean is a natural leader through and through. he would be on the quidditch team, with good grades in defense against the dark arts and failing in herbology badly. jean would be main organiser of gryffindor common room parties, always sneaking off with a hufflepuff or gryffindor girl. has his name displayed in the three broomsticks for most butterbeer pints consumed in an hour.
connie - hufflepuff
connie would be an absolute quidditch head, playing on the team and going to all the world cup tournaments. he’d need extra help from sasha or jean in his potions class, prone to blowing things up. surprisingly very good at extension charms and unlocking charms. i think his patronus would be an otter or a badger and his is one of the strongest in his class. always forgetting the password to the dorms.
sasha - hufflepuff
sasha is a muggle-born witch but a very strong one. she would be a hufflepuff being extremely loyal to her friends and hardworking. of course she’s absolutely obsessed with the great hall and the endless supply of food at the tables. she would definitely be a quidditch player with connie. would use potions skills to create candy and food related magical items. secretly obsessed with the gossip column in the daily prophet.
i could do soo many more agh i love

FREDERICK. Chapter 51
Tumblr media
You had gained access to his phone for the first time — a real triumph. You thought about it all the time, but never, not once had the right opportunity presented itself. With a fingerprint lock, the phone was out of your reach. And you knew that Dr. Chilton kept everything important in it. He almost never parted with it. During your meetings, you found out that he kept work correspondence there, an appointment calendar, even files with medical records and personal files. And probably a lot of other interesting things. But even if the phone was locked with a PIN code that you knew, you needed time, and you never had enough of it, and the phone was usually in Dr. Chilton's pocket. But the main thing is that if he spotted you, he would immediately understand what all this was about. He would immediately understand that he was absolutely right not to trust anyone. And that everything he liked so much about you was a nasty pretense. It was unlikely that after this you would see both of them — your love and Dr. Chilton. In any case, you could not risk such a risk. But now, with the graphic key... You turned around — the psychiatrist, covered with a blanket, was sleeping even more soundly.
What more could you want?
You carefully pulled the phone out of the briefcase. You held your breath. The graphic key worked. The phone was at your complete disposal.
It had everything you needed.
Half an hour later, you put Dr. Chilton's phone back in his briefcase. You straightened his blanket, left a couple of popcorns, lost in the folds of the blanket, on his chest. You knew how sensitive he was about his image and about how he looked in the eyes of others. Especially in yours. Let him suffer not only from the fact that he fell asleep and missed all the most interesting things (probably a good half of the movie and whatever could have happened after). Then you quietly left his apartment and carefully closed the door. As you drove home, a stupid smile did not leave your face. You triumphed. Now you were going to be very busy.
You copied all the folders with documents. Downloaded applications that you did not have and set them up. Dr. Chilton's passwords were perfectly substituted from the browser settings. You confirmed all notifications (your account was logged in on another device), synced all profiles, mail, calendar, schedule.
Now Dr. Chilton's phone was your phone.
***
Considering some of the rumors, the fact that Dr. Chilton had started to conduct “sessions” with you without actually having official permission to do so, and that for some reason he had been deprived of this permission, certainly gave you hope. Surely there would be some excellent dirt in the file folders and mail.
But that was only half the plan. You would begin the second part very soon, involving the orderly Higgins. You just needed a little time to sort out what you already had.
You sat hugging your phone and laptop all night. I wonder if Dr. Chilton is still passed out on the couch? You once thought about slipping him a sleeping pill and then unlocking his phone with his own finger, but it was too risky. And when he woke up, he would quickly guess what you did.
You transferred the folders with files to the computer. It is clear that Dr. Chilton kept personal files and medical records on the phone for quick access when needed. The phone was protected by a reliable lock, moreover, the storage with folders was also locked. But the graphic key to it was the same... So for about an hour you read confidential documents that were not intended for prying eyes. This alone would be enough for the inspection committee.
By the way, the reading was not particularly exciting. You could even say — depressing. All these criminals, judging by what you read, really were some kind of psychopaths. Prison really wasn't the place for people like that — a mental hospital for especially dangerous criminals was much more suitable for them. The dry lists of what they had done made you feel sick. Monsters. A file storage for the completely sick, cold-blooded killers.
Are you sure? Because the files for your love are here too.
You had to take a break.
You read his files last. His medical history was practically empty, he had never been under the supervision of a doctor, and he had no illness as such, it was Dr. Chilton who stubbornly insisted that your love was a psychopath, and sought to make sure of it by any means. Thank him, of course, because otherwise your criminal would now be in completely different circumstances. And, probably, awaiting a death sentence. But the personal file... Three pages. There are gaps that even you could not fill. There is information that even you did not know. Information about his crimes — some of which affected you for the first time. Feeling sick, you closed the file. All these documents are just lifeless facts, they do not reflect reality. This was not the first time you told yourself this, and therefore it did not sound very convincing. To distract yourself, you started to open doctor`s mail. There were two of them. Personal, practically empty, and work — a box full. You slowly flipped through the pages, glancing at the topics and first sentences of the letters. There was no point in opening them all, you wouldn't have managed it before Christmas. Some of them seemed quite interesting to you. And some of the very old ones especially.
[A.B.] Dr. Chilton, you have ruined my life. I am not that brave, but I hope the other people you have mentally damaged will sue you and ruin yours.
[Dr. Irving] Don't worry, my friend. It's not that bad, we can't help everyone, she's just being dramatic. She tends to do that, by the way. And by the way, I'm seeing her now. She's a pretty, you were right.
[MedC] Dear Dr. Chilton, We must deny your application for additional funding.
[Dr. Irving] This isn't the first time. My friend, I am seriously worried about you. It seems you can't help anyone. Should you continue?
[Dr. Irving] I think I'll share my concerns with the committee. I'm warning you for old times' sake.
[MedC] Dear Dr. Chilton, We must deny your application for private client therapy. Your institution has a special profile, and we do not think it appropriate to stray from it into the private realm.
[Dr. Irving] Nothing personal, buddy, I am only concerned about the damaged souls entrusted to the wrong hands.
[MedC] Dear Dr. Chilton, the attached file contains Form C-3 signed by the Director (prohibition of private consultations), please review, sign, scan and send back within 24 hours. Thank you for your understanding.
There was much more, but you were tired. What you had found was enough. You were right, the phone was a big help. Access to confidential documents especially. You also found a couple of tax returns that might be of interest to someone. But all these files and emails upset you. You wanted to end it all as soon as possible. At one point, you even thought about uploading child pornography to Dr. Chilton's account, but you weren't sure that you wouldn't be tracked down, and you definitely shouldn't harm yourself. You looked at the calendar — Dr. Chilton had three meetings scheduled tomorrow, he wouldn't have time for you. You could calmly go through the phone one more time and make a further plan.
Closer to the morning, you put the phone aside and finally went to bed. But scraps of personal files of psychopathic killers, including yours, mixed with the psychiatrist's correspondence, were spinning in your head. You tossed and turned for at least half an hour, although you wanted to sleep.
Eight murders. Denied and denies son's involvement.
Keeps claiming she did it out of love.
High aggression level.
Not cooperating, refused visits. Unclear connection. Accomplice? Victim? Pay special attention to [blank].
People you have mentally damaged.
She's a pretty, you were right.
It seems you can't help anyone.
Nothing personal, buddy.
Nothing personal, Dr. Chilton.

Brumous Sneak Peek
This is an unedited sneak peek, but I was too excited to post it.
Chapter Sixty: Through the Cracks
Marlene scooted closer to him, her lips pressing against his jaw just below his ear. Her fingers lightly caressed his chest. Sirius slid his eyes closed, enjoying the way she trailed her lips down his neck. Her body shifted as she glided on top of him. Sirius ran his hands up her bare thighs. He didn’t think it would take long for him to be ready for round two. Marlene was doing an excellent job already.
“Sirius,” a male familiar voice called.
Sirius snapped his eyes open, his hands stilling on Marlene’s thighs. She must not have heard it because she was still kissing him just above his clavicle. Slowly, his head turned and Sirius jumped at the sight of his messy haired godson.
“Fuck!” Sirius shouted.
“What?” Marlene pulled away, her wide eyes staring at him.
He hadn’t even heard the kid come in. Had Marlene let him know her unlocking pattern for the door?
“What are you doing here?” Sirius asked, trying to pull the blanket up to cover Marlene’s naked body.
Marlene turned to look at Harry as well. “Who are you talking to?” she asked, her palms pressing against his chest.
Sirius squinted at the figure, his eyes flickering up to the kid’s forehead. There was no scar. Sirius held his breath. Now the ghost of his dead best mate was visiting him when he was having sex? Could his life not get any more fucked up?
“Look at the time,” James demanded.
“What?” Sirius gasped out. “The time?”
“Sirius, who are you talking to?” Marlene demanded.
“Look at the time, Pads, please,” James insisted.
Heart hammering in his chest, Sirius’ gaze flickered over to the clock on the bedside table. It was a quarter past nine. It was past curfew. Sirius realized that Harry hadn’t activated the watch yet. Sirius would have felt it. He looked back at James to see he was gone.
“It’s past curfew,” Sirius whispered.
“So?” Marlene asked. "Sirius, what is going on?"
Sirius swallowed, his hand tapping Marlene’s thigh. “Can you get off me? Harry never activated the watch for the evening. I’m going to bloody well kill him. He knows he can’t forget.”
Marlene eased off Sirius, sitting next to him. Sirius moved until his upper body dangled off the side of the bed so he could reach his trousers on the floor. Except Sirius didn’t think Harry forgot. Harry was a responsible kid. He always did what Sirius asked of him, even if he complained about it needlessly. Harry understood how important it was for his own safety. Tugging the mirror out of the pocket, Sirius sat up in bed.
“Harry Potter!” Sirius shouted at the mirror, his fingers running through his hair to make it look less like sex hair. “Harry Potter!”
Marlene’s hand touched his knee as the seconds dragged on. Sirius felt sick.
“Harry Potter! Merlin fucking damn it!” Sirius hissed. “Harry, pick the fuck up!”
James wouldn’t have come to him unless something was wrong. Harry not picking up the mirror right away was evidence to that. Sirius tossed the mirror onto Marlene’s lap before he leaned over the bed once more. Good thing he brought the copy of the map with him. He pulled that and his wand out of his pocket before sitting back up.
He pressed the tip of his wand to the parchment and lines started to appear to form the map. At thirty-seven, Sirius didn’t want to mess around with silly passwords. He tied the activation and deactivation directly to his wand so all he would need to do was tap it. Sirius shifted the parchment until he could see Gryffindor Tower. He tapped his wand in the middle of the tower and dragged it down to magnify the space so he could read all the names.

Emilie Autumn Goodreads Q&A (2017)
NOTE: Goodreads has an "ask the author" feature, where EA invited fans to ask her questions about TAFWVG around the time of its paperback release. There have been screenshots floating around of these for a long time and all questions are still live on the site, but I wanted to put them in a more readable, archiveable format here. Questions are listed in "oldest to newest" order. I've removed some of EA's "hello"s, "thank you"s, and similiar openers/closers.

"I'm delighted to answer questions today about the all-new Asylum eBook just out! I'm curious what YOU'RE curious about. P.S. You can ask about the treasure hunt in the eBook, but I may not answer;)…"
Hi EA=) I love my hardbook version of the asylum and am enjoying the new ebook. It seems the majority of omissions within the new ebook version occur in the "Hospital Entries" (i.,e Emilie with an e) timeline. Did you remove sections from the modern day storyline for editing purposes or because you had a change of opinion about the content? Thank you! love you. PS- these puzzles are maddening! =)
Thank you for your excellent question and for, in fact, being my FIRST question to answer on GRs!
You are so correct—while there are loads of additional chapters/bits in the new eBook version of the Asylum, there are indeed several omissions in what were previously the (overly) extensive Hospital Entries. The reason for this is disappointingly simple: those bits just didn't need to be there.
When I first write the story, I included most everything that I had written down in those diaries that I kept in the hospital—it seemed to be the "honest" way to do things. However, that was a long time ago, and I find that, as I've grown up into a much better writer and storyteller, it is far more important for me to give the world a truly good novel than it is to include everything in my diary. The omissions make the novel a better technical work, and move the reader through the story much faster. This new version is more of a roller-coaster ride than the original edition, which was a sort of bizarre wandering down a very dark rabbit hole. Both worthwhile, but I like the "thriller" aspect that the increased speed gives the story.
I'm so grateful that you have enjoyed both, and don't give up on the puzzles—they CAN be solved;)...
Hey Emilie Will the hidden music be compiled into an album? And is the musical/play/film still happening?
There are, as it sounds like you've found, several hidden songs in the eBook that require decoded passwords to unlock, and many of those are indeed not yet released. They will not be put out in a proper album form as they are songs from the upcoming Asylum musical, and so I don't intend to release them commercially until the musical is completed. I hope you've enjoyed them!
The musical and film are still in development (long long long process with more moving parts and people than I care to say) and will DEFINITELY happen;).
Is there more on the fact that Madame Mournington's daughter Violet and Violet the patient from the hospital share the name? Obviously there is paralelism between the hospital and the Asylum, but I wonder if it's just a random fact or there's a reason behind it. Lots of love and tea <3
I have an odd connection to the name "Violet," and the truth is that I've no idea why. It keeps popping up in my life, and the beginning of that was with this story. I desperately wish I could say, "oh, yes, well it's because Mournington's daughter Violet has an alternate reality of her own and so on...," but I can't. That was simply the name of my fellow inmate in the hospital, and then, when the Asylum world began to form in my notebook, that name was just there in M.M.'s letters, as the first (or was she?) victim of young Stockill. I didn't plan it, or think about it at all, and I didn't even realize until long after the first edition was printed. If I had, I would likely have changed one of the Violets to something else to avoid confusion. Perhaps there IS a deep connection between those two characters that even I am not aware of, and if I ever find out, I'll be sure to let you know:)!
Hi Emilie! I've just started reading the e-book. It's been a while since I have read the original, but I know you said there are a lot of changes--so I'm excited to see what's coming! How did writing the e-book differ from writing the first edition? How did you decide what changes needed to be made?
Yes, it is a very different book indeed, and I think you will enjoy the changes;).
To answer your question, the eBook is certainly based off of the original, so it wasn't a completely new story, but the way in which it is constructed is quite different, far more sleek, with lots of unnecessary bits cut out, and lots of new and very exciting bits added, and yes, with bits put in that I was honestly afraid to write down before.
How did I know what changes to make? Well, I simply asked myself what I wanted the reader's experience to be, after having all of this time to evolve since the first edition came out. I wanted to tell a ripping good story, which I thought I had, but I had also learned so much about storytelling over the last 8 years, largely by performing for all of YOU live on stage. I learned what makes you laugh, what makes you cry, when something is too long, too much, not enough, and I also was heavily affected by the book moving in the direction of becoming a live stage musical/film. I wanted certain scenes that the original book hadn't shown, and I knew now which scenes didn't add to the real story and perhaps even took away from the excitement and momentum.
The resulting new version is, I believe, a far superior literary work, and I also believe it is even more magical than the original, more honest, and more bold. It also delves more into the love story between Emily and Veronica, and this was very, very important to me.
How was your process of moving the story from the hardback edition to the ebook format? How did you choose which aspects to prioritize, how to modify it and what to add or leave out? I'm very interested in your overall process of revising your story under this new perspective.
I think I just answered this in a question above by another reader, but I didn't want to ignore your question, and I wanted to thank you for being here and asking.
Oh! Something I hadn't mentioned in my previous answer was how difficult it was to re-format the book into something primarily text-based, and not entirely illustrated as the hard-cover was. I had great insecurity about whether the completely graphical format was necessary to the story, i.e., could the story stand up for itself without the pictures.
After revising the text, and having the chance to edit the story for the first time (when the first edition came out I was completely isolated, there was no proof-reader let alone an editor—as many can surely tell!), I found that I actually liked reading the book as a simple text version! It's more thrilling, and more powerful, and makes its point much more clear (to me anyway).
In the new eBook, I've put in loads of graphics and puzzles and such, but the focus remains on the text, and I thing the story deserves that focus now:).
How did you choose the songs to be included in the e-book? Because, there are more songs than those, right?
I'm guessing that you mean, there are more songs in the musical, correct? If so, then I can tell you that there are indeed more songs in the musical of the Asylum story, but that most of them will have to wait to be heard until the real thing comes out with the real actors singing them;). I've included in the eBook only those that I felt my own voice could represent (I'm the only one singing in these versions), and which I thought would be a special treat for a reader to find, placed in the exact spots in the book where they will be heard in the show.
Will there be a sequel to TAFWVG, or another story from that world?
I have four new writing projects in the works, the first is a very, very small thing: a one act play that is not from the Asylum world but does take place in that era, and which may be something that only I will love, we shall see.
Next comes what I would like to be a series of books about the actual Striped Stocking Society, and this is, of course, inspired by the Asylum world:)! Very excited to be working on those...
Then there are two more projects that I fear I can't give away just yet, and that aren't exactly in the Asylum world, but are very much magical and historical (because everything wonderful is!).
I must add, though, that I don't know how soon a new novel will arrive as everything comes second to the musical, as you know;).
The end of Emil-y's story strikes me as tremendously optimistic and life-affirming, yet I can see how others (like Emil-ie!) may react sadly to it and view it as tragic. Is this ambiguity intentional, or do you have a preferred interpretation?
You're good at this;)!!
The ambiguity is absolutely intentional—a good book will always say more about the person reading it than about the writer. In the Asylum, the choice is yours. Do they live? Do they die? Is she crazy? Is she not? Did any of this happen? Did everything happen? Or was she dead all along?
The answer will be what you need it to be, and, for me, that changes all the time, still. The ending is ambiguous for you because it is ambiguous for me. I don't know what happens. But I have a very good idea;)...and it's wonderful. And yes, I think it is very, very positive AND life-affirming, just as you say.
The new book shows us how and where certain songs fit in to the text. Do you associate any other passages with particular music? And more importantly, are there any chapters that would go well with particular flavours of tea??? :p
Haaaaa! Yes!
This reminds me, I always wanted to have a flavor guide to the Asylum, what sort of tea you ought to try here, what sort of scone you ought to have there, and you've inspired me to get on it!
Oh, and yes, there are many other passages that have corresponding songs in the musical version, but I haven't included those as I have to save a little something for when that comes out;)
There were a couple of changes from the audio book to this new edition (eg Emil-ie's age went from 17 to 27). May there someday be a revised audiobook, maybe with more songs? :)
I was waiting for someone to find that!
Yes, there will be a revised audiobook, but I haven't mentioned anything about it because the revisions will be quite small. Primarily, I will be putting the swear words back in, and the age will return to my true age at the time, which was 27.
I'm very glad to have the opportunity to explain the age change, as it must be a bit confusing for those who have noticed it:
As you may know, I was signed by a prominent literary agent a couple of years ago, whom I respected greatly. When the agent felt strongly that the story should be aimed at a younger audience for the sake of being able to include pictures in the book, I was told that it would be necessary to lower the protagonist's age to the high teens. Oh, yes, and to take out all the lovely swear words, and some of the darker, more controversial bits (don't talk about certain types of abuse, don't mention abortion at all, etc). Was I comfortable with these alterations? Oh HELLLLLLLLL no. Not. At. All. However, I conceded, because I wanted very badly to believe that I was being advised in the best interest of my readers, and that, were I to make these alterations (which, to be fair, didn't really change the story a great deal), more people would be able to be exposed to the story, particularly young people who may need its message the most. How could I argue with that?
In the end, however, I decided to go my own way and publish this new version myself, as I seem to have done with my music and everything else. I wasn't comfortable with the changes, no matter how small, and am re-recording the few little bits of the audiobook to reflect the current text version of the book that you now have:).
are you planning to release the book in other languages? spanish maybe?
Hello Mauricio!!! I'm so glad to hear from you!
This is crazy, I was just discussing this very issue with Scorps not five minutes ago. We were wondering how to go about translating the book into other languages so that the humor and particular poetry of the words is maintained, and the most difficult thing is that I myself can't check the translations because I, sadly, only read English (for now, I'm trying to learn Italian;). I am looking into this now, because I absolutely realize that, while most countries speak English, they don't necessarily read it. I am very open to suggestions on how to go about all of this.
(Admin note: Mauricio ran emilieautumn.cl, sometimes called The Asylum Chile or Emilie Autumn Chile. He interviewed EA while she was in South America and appeared onstage with her for "One Foot...", and would also translate news from English to Spanish for Spanish-speaking Plague Rats)
hi emilie, at 67, i may be your oldest plague rat. i was introduced to your music several years ago. you've stayed on my radar ever since and i've enjoyed listening to your music and viewing what i can on youtube. the new ebook made reading your book finally affordable to me and i thank you for that. my question is, do you think your work will always be rooted in the victorian era and the asylum experience?
You might be surprised at how many Plague Rats are about your age, 67 is quite young after all:)!
I am so grateful and honored by your continued support over the years, and for still enjoying what I do, even as I evolve and change. Many audiences do not allow an artist to do those things peacefully, so thank you indeed.
Yours is such a fantastic question, because it is true that I have worked within the Asylum world for 10 years now, and am still very much immersed, largely because it continues to grow. I know that I will never leave it, and I will always feel myself an Inmate (in the best possible way), I will absolutely create novels and other works outside of that storyline. While all efforts must be spent on the Asylum musical and film at this time, I so look forward to being able to show you other worlds and eras. Please stay with me, and you will meet them in good time;).
Will you go on tour to promote the e-book? I suppose you can't have a book signing because it is digital, but I would love to hear you do a read aloud or something along those lines. Or do we have to wait for the musical to come out to see you go on tour again?
I would LOVE to go on a little tour to be able to read to Ratties and, really, just to see you again and sing a song together! Thank you for being interested in this!
I've been discussing the book tour with Veronica and we are indeed planning something, perhaps to correspond with the upcoming release of the paperback.
I know it has been a while since the last tour, and it is very painful to be away from you for this long, but I will do my best to remedy this at least in part, and arrange something soon;).
What is the Count's first name? And who was the Captain's mother?
Brilliant questions! Why don't you invent some theories and post them in the Striped Stocking Society;)????? I'd love to hear YOUR take on it!
Suffer????? ;_;?
Suffer is still here, but I desperately wanted to have the Rats bring Emily the spoon that would become so crucial to her fate later on;)…I'm excited about the changes and evolutions to the story and I hope you are too!
The return of the abbreviated Diaries was a welcome surprise. Were they written long before or after the hospital stay, or did everything happen at once? And how soon after you got out did you decide to write the book?
Oh thank you, I'm so glad you noticed and like them!
In the Audiobook, I had been encouraged to leave them out, particularly to make the book a bit more friendly to a younger audience who may have a harder time processing the darker bits of those diaries. However, as they are back in the new eBook (I've made the decision to publish independently so that I can keep the darker bits that publishers were put off by, and let the audience decide what it can handle), I am contemplating recording them for the next printing of the audiobook in order to have the book and audiobook match up:). Thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain this change!
Almost all of the additional diaries were written before the hospital commitment, which is why Emilie is so worried that the staff is reading her diary - she knows that those bits that are in her same notebook will incriminate her as being more dangerous/insane than she is desperately trying to make everyone believe she is. As the end of the new eBook shows, you see whether she had reason to be afraid or not (trying desperately not to show spoilers;).
I made the decision to release what was in my journals, which was most of the book, both the hospital and Asylum worlds, perhaps 6 months after I managed to escape. My music career was beginning to take off with the release of Opheliac, which pre-dates the book, and I had this feeling that no one would really ever understand what my music was about, or who I really was, if they didn't know my complete story. I'm sure that many people were put off by the truth I told, but for the people who would eventually become Plague Rats, I believe it was very important, and what I most wanted to feel was that, if people liked me, they should like me for the right reasons. Of course, now the audience for the book is even greater than the audience for my music, with many people reading it that don't know me as a musician at all, and I actually really appreciate having the opportunity to be read simply from a literary standpoint. My hope is that new readers of the Asylum will become Plague Rats and join us in our mission to spread the Plague of individuality to the death:)!!
Is there some hidden meaning on the fact that Madame Mournington's daughter Violet and Violet the patient in the hospital share the name? Obviously, there's a paralelism between the hospital and the Asylum, but I wonder if there's more on the story or if it is just a random fact.
I had actually answered this point yesterday in another post, so do scroll around and see if you can find it, but I wanted to thank you for your question and for being here with me:). You're amazing.
According to the numbers, not every letter from Emil-y is published in the book. Do these unpublished letters exist somewhere? May they ever be shared?
There are many hidden clues in the book waiting to be found;)...perhaps there are bits online, hidden in secret links, that are waiting for you?
(Admin Note: People looked into this at the time and found that there weren't any missing letters. The only one that isn't in the index is #1, but that's because it's incased inside a Hospital Entry.)
The hospital entries can be tough to read as you were clearly not in a good place mentally or physically. Was there anything you wrote then that you disagree with now, reading it ten years later? And were you ever tempted to edit from this perspective?
I actually did edit some bits in this new eBook that I felt were simply too much and didn't add to the story. I feel that, while being bold and honest and even gruesome and terrifying has an absolute place in literature and in all art forms, they should always be to a purpose, an never more than is needed to make a point, even if they are truly what was written in the original diary.
I still "go there," so to speak, but I just don't go on as long about it;). The reason why I kept in as much as I did was that, over the years, I have been surprised to find that most of the kind words from Plague Rats who have told me how much the book was helpful to them, mentally, stemmed from these very difficult-to-read bits. Thus, where I had once (when I was recording the audiobook for example) doubted whether those bits should be there at all, I know believe that they are some of the most important parts.
I don't know if you'll have time to answer yet another question, but I'll take my chances! Do you feel that your personal perspective on the message you want your story to carry has changed as you've grown? Do you think that you have now another aim with the story that you hadn't thought of when you first released the book? Thanks for answering our questions!
My perspective has absolutely changed over the years, absolutely. And this change corresponds directly with my own personal health, physical and mental.
For example, when the book was first released, I had only two aims - to explain myself to a growing audience that thought they knew me but didn't truly, and then to expose the corruption of the modern day mental health care system and educate in order to inspire at least a tiny bit of change.
Now that I am healthier, I am much freer in my mind, much less self-centered because I no longer need to be self-centered for my own survival. I am now completely focused on others, and how I can be of assistance in this lifetime. I feel that my personal mission, my reason for being here, is to give strength wherever I can, to encourage individuality and confidence, and to create communities wherein people can help each other to rise up and reach for their own personal stars, however high they might be.
Oh, and I also feel that one of the book's true powers, which I didn't even realize when I was putting it all together, is the friendship it shows between women, and even the romantic love. Women working together is the highest magic, and I'm so pleased that this has become one of the story's most important themes.
In the book you mention a historical case of a murdered girl whose striped stockings survived a fire and this led to the capture of her murderer. Is this something that really happened or a nod to Emil-y's story? None of us PRs have ever been able to find a historical source, but perhaps we are not looking in the right place \<3/~
This truly was a historical account that I had read many years ago, I didn't embellish on that at all. I dearly wish I remembered where it came from, or that I could find it again...if you ever do, please let me know!
how does the ebook differ from the original book? do you prefer the ebook to the original? Also, how is the musical writing going?
Great question! There are so many differences that I can't possibly mention them all here, but I can say that the eBook (soon to be in paperback as well) has been refined to give the reader a more exciting experience, and reflects how I have become, frankly, better as a writer and storyteller than I was ten years ago. There are new chapters and songs and characters because the Asylum world itself has evolved, and so, given the chance to add and update in a new version, how could I resist;)? I dearly love the new version, and I definitely, definitely prefer it to the original. I ask any Plague Rat who's read the original to give this new eBook a chance—I don't think they will regret it;).
The musical is going AMAZINGLY, and only takes such a very long time because one has to arrange the very complicated business side of things, and also has to wait for one's preferred actors to be available all at the same time. The new eBook does have secret links to several of the songs from the musical though, I hope you find them!
Will you ever do a book tour? Love from the Netherlands xx (((>.<)))
I would dearly love to tour, and am beginning to plan something now because I miss you all very much!! If you've signed up for the Asylum Emporium newsletter, you will be the first to know:)!
Miss Autumn, I have two questions for you, if that's quite alright. How do you get into the head space to write from the point of view of so many different characters? Secondly, in your daily life how do you remain confident, motivated, and full of wonderment in a world of negativity and animosity?
As to your first, I find it very easy to write from multiple character perspectives because I embrace the truth that there is a part of me in all of these characters, no matter how evil or delightful they may be. I so enjoy allowing myself the luxury of exploring all of these different parts of myself that I would certainly not be allowed to do in civilized society were I not writing "fiction." I encourage anyone, writer or not, to explore themselves through writing bits, thoughts, sentences, as other people (or animals;), simply as an outlet for the hidden corners of our consciousness that may make us healthier, more whole beings if we allowed them room to play once in a while.
To your second question, that is a much more difficult one to answer, because the truth is that I don't. While I am motivated, I am not confident, and I still have a strong tendency towards depression and going deep into the dark—it's just where my mind naturally goes unless a great deal of effort is put into keeping it out of that place. As you may be able to tell, I do put a great deal of effort into seeing the light, feeling the wonderment, and my secret is very, very simple: YOU.
Because I have you and other Plague Rats to talk to, whom I am so grateful to know are listening to me if I speak, I make myself see things the way I want YOU to see them, point things out to you that I know I need to see myself. If I post something on Instagram or FB about empowerment, or confidence, or not caring what other people think, it is just as much a reminder for me as it is meant to be for you. Thank you and all of the Asylum community for giving me a reason to be a fighter who will never stop believing in magic.
Thank you so much for being open about your disorder. I was recently fired because I didn't "leave my bipolar disorder out of the workplace." How do you suggest I educate my employers about the disorder without getting defensive or them looking at me like I'm incapable after proving myself otherwise? Thank you.
Thank you for sharing and being so honest. I'm going to give you an answer that you may not like, but I hope you will understand:
As bipolar people, we HAVE to leave our disorder out of the workplace. We have to. We have to be more skilled, more "stable", more "normal" seeming than anyone else (in professional situations I mean—in creative situations we can use our "crazy";). As a female, you already know what this is like to have to be better. Now add an interesting mental condition onto that, and that's how much stronger and better you have to be. Why? Because once we allow ourselves (meaning all bipolar individuals) to be seen as "weaker" or "less capable" or "less reliable," we are ruined, and we have contributed to that stereotype that we cannot be trusted.
How do you do this? How do you seem normal when you're not, but your professional situation (or just general life) demands it? It's not easy, but I know you can do it, and I know this because, as a rule, bipolar people are exceptionally intelligent. You make sure that you are getting the help and support that your mental challenges demand. You make sure that you have a therapist or at the very least a good friend to talk to. You look into balancing medication if you haven't already. You CAN function in EVERY situation with absolute success if you are taking care of yourself. But we need a lot of help, and that's ok. Some times it takes work to get that help, but I did it and so can you.
Lastly, don't worry about educating your employers—use that energy on making yourself as healthy as possible instead. The truth is that it isn't our employer's responsibility to know anything about us, and if we require that they give us special consideration, we are making ourselves less valuable.
We have to accept that we live in a world where special consideration will not be given to us, or anyone really, and that's actually just fine because we really don't need it. In my showbiz career, everybody knows about the things that make me different. But in my general participation within society, I never talk about it, and no one knows, and that is just as it should be. When talking to therapists and friends and family, let it all out and ask for help when you need it. But, in the outside world, think of being bipolar as a precious secret that is yours to keep and actually benefit from, because there are indeed benefits.
You've got this, Kaylyn, trust. You've learned something from this situation, and you will thrive in the next one. I believe in you.
I have an curious question regarding the riddles and ciphers. I hope I can explain myself correctly. By the time you reach a puzzle in the book that involves a riddle, should you know the answer? Since the riddles reference something in the story. For example, the swirl/wave one - is the answer "hidden" (or referenced to) before? Or is it better to read the book as a whole and then go back to solve riddles?
Thank you for your question! I completely understand what you're asking, and you are quite right, it is much better to read the book and then go back to the puzzles (and make sure you have an internet connection when you do;). When trying to solve, I can tell you that some basic knowledge of cryptography will be very useful, but that it will take you nowhere unless you can solve the riddles, and the riddles can only be solved by those who have read the whole story and really, truly understand it:). It sounds like you are well on your way!
It was pretty obvious that Emily's supposedly dead older sister had been sold in the same way Emily was sold, so as soon as Anne was introduced, living at Bainbridge and looking similar to Emily, it seemed clear who she was. I kept waiting for Emily to figure it out, but she never did, or at least never acknowledged it. Can you confirm than Anne was Emily's older sister? And if so, did either of them ever know it?
You are clever! I cannot confirm because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone here who hasn't yet figured out as much as you have, and besides, most of the fun in writing is letting the reader come to her own conclusions. What I CAN tell you is that in the book, as in our lives, there are a handful of things that characters may not say out loud, but that they always knew on some level. In this case, the two girls' behavior to each other and the language that they use pretty much indicates how much they know, and I think they know a great deal;). All my love, and thank you for being such a thorough reader and picking up on all of the little details—that's what writers dream of!
EA. I am enjoying your book so much that I have 3 versions of it lol. With the newest ebook (just got it), the question I have is about the puzzles. I seem to be noticing a theme to them. Is the intentional, or am I just seeing something that is based on my own personal perception? Much love, and I look forward to seeing what is to come.
You are a dream, thank you for all of your support and for being such an important part of the Asylum! You are deeply appreciated.
To answer your very good question, there is certainly a theme to the puzzles as they all fit together in the end to form a master puzzle which will lead you to the location of The Spoon of the Royals. Now, whether that theme is the same as what you are noticing I cannot say;). My advice is to be very thorough, read the story carefully, and once you have, go back to the verrrrry beginning and see what there is to see…
All my love, and I hope you enjoy this new eBook more than any versions you have read yet - it is my favorite!
Hello Emilie! I was finally able to get the hardcover copy of your Asylum book, and I wanted to say how fantastic it is!! I'd love to join the Striped Stocking Society but only have the hardcover edition, would that be possible? Also, are you planning to tour again in the US? I'd love to see you preform! You are an inspiration to a lot of people and for that…I love you! ❤️❤️
I love YOU too, thank you for having that big beautiful version of the book, and for being such an important part of the Asylum world!
I had hoped for those in the S.S.S. to have the new version of the book because so much discussion is going on around the puzzles and other details the are not present in the version you have. However! Please contact our Asylum Ambassadrice and she will be happy to help you with your S.S.S. application—just tell her that EA sent you on Goodreads, and we will make it work;).
Hi Emilie, I'm enjoying the Audiobook along with the eBook! I read the hardcover copy years ago, but now everything is clearer and I am literally crying and laughing with you. We met twice in Italy and 'spiritual' is a word that can describe those experiences. Now, what I want to ask is: will you be releasing other songs from the musical and/or from other projects? Your music and stories are LIFE! I Love You <3 G-PR
Of course, I remember you!! You are so cherished. And Italy is my heart. I am so glad you are enjoying the eBook because now you can hear some of the songs from the musical that I've been working so hard on! I must hold some of the musical songs back so that there is something new for you all when that finally comes out, but I will always try and give you new music and words in the meantime - I know it's been too long!! Not only that, but there is a new novel in the works, no one knows about it yet, I've not said a peep...join us in the S.S.S. and I may tell you the title;)... Thank you for everything, for being with me over these years, and for being with me in the future of very exciting, magical things to come;)...
This isn't exactly a question, but I simply wanted to say how happy it makes me to be following you and listening to your stuff. I'm a little bit too broke to read the novel just yet, but I wanted to throw my affection into the void of your inbox all the same?? XD
Money should never prevent a girl from reading a good book. Bless you, and send an email to the Asylum Ambassadrice at help (at) asylumemporium (dot) com, she'll straighten this out;).
will we be lucky down in australia to see you tour?
Dearest [], thank you so much for wanting to come and sing with me! I've been so lucky to be in Australia three times in my life now—three times more than most Americans will ever have the privilege to go, and I am so grateful... Whilst I work on the musical I'm off the road for a bit, but I will try and get back to you as soon as I possibly can!
Hello! I am such a huge fan of your work!!! (ps. I went to see you for my first concert and it was a wonderful experience!) My question is if you have a music playlist or if you have a certain film going in the background as you write? If so, what are they?
You are amazing, because I was planning a post about this very thing…in the background when I am working, I have British comedy on, every day. Fact. If I'm working on music I've got nothing on of course, and if I'm writing, it must be complete silence, but if I'm doing more administrative things like I am at the moment, it's Fawlty Towers, A Bit of Fry & Laurie, The Great British Baking Show, things like that. I am pretend British, and I don't care who knows it;)!!! Oh! And if the tele isn't on in the background, then it's jazz recordings from the 1920s.
Not really about the book itself, but I find myself curious. Do you listen to music when you read at all? If so, what do you like to listen to when you read?
I can't listen to anything at all when I am reading or writing…so that rules out working in coffee shops. My ears are uber sensitive because of the musical training I suppose But as I said in another answer, if I'm not reading or writing but just doing more dull work, websites or graphics or whatnot, it's British comedy at low volume all the time.
Miss Emilie. I love you…I love your book. My question is was Jolie modelled from Capt Maggot and is Veronica Miss Varlow?..thank you for your book.
Amazing question…Jolie was actually NOT modeled from Captain Maggots as I hadn't yet met her at the time of the book's writing…in my show, however, Maggots took on the role of the Captain, and created a character that was truly all her own, and is at least as good as the character in the book:)!. And yes, Veronica in the book is absolutely Miss Varlow, to the finest detail. Veevers has been my love in past lives over centuries, and our romance found its way into the book in great detail.
Who is your favourite fictional character, Emilie? Greetings from Blighty xx
I've got two favourite fictional characters: Jane Eyre and the narrator with no name from Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca.
Hi, EA. I have the read the story many times over the years and I always interpreted the contents of the Asylum Letters to be an autobiographical allegory. That they mirrored events in your personal life from your early life to your psych stay. Am I right in understanding Emil-y's story this way? I believe you were telling a lot of the truth in the 'fictional' part ironically enough. Love you so much xoxo
You are very clever, and very astute. I believe, after much reflection, that it is exactly as you suspect. I believe Emil(y) exists to say those things that I could not/can not say about myself. She is also the better parts of me, because she is more honest in some ways. There are things I can only write down if I say that they happened to someone else, and Emil(y) came to me, I believe, to serve that purpose.
In the Audiobook and ebook editions, The Captain is now a blonde where before she had black hair, with art in the 1st and 2nd editions being based off photos of Vecona, did you change her to having black hair originally to match Vecona and go back to an earlier idea of her appearance in the 3rd edition or was there a more symbolic reason for the change?
Vecona and I took the earliest Captain photos together as I wanted to include pictures of my captain character in the book, and we were together at the time I was putting the graphics in place, so she was the perfect model. Several aesthetic and character changes have happened over the years as I came to think of the story in a more visual fashion, brought about by the in-process conversion to a Broadway show and film. The Captain is now blond because, through the many concert tours with Veronica and Captain Maggots, I saw how fantastic it looked when we all had completely different hair colors. When you envision the book as a stage play, you see that the ideal is for the three lead girls to look as different as possible, and, in the newest version of the book, they do:). Several of the latest evolutions have happened because, not only do they tell a better story, but they tell a better visual story on stage. I feel really good about this, and I hope you enjoy the changes as well!
Additionally, having the Captain be blond ties her even more obviously to the Count de Rothsberg, for any who had missed that connection the first time around;).
So you've mentioned a few times that your mother's family was originally from Scotland and your father was German, with much of Emily's plot being in a lot of ways a metaphor for your own life (or that's how it seems, maybe I'm a bit off base here.) how did you land on having Emily be from Ireland?
I believe that Emil(y) came to me as a way for me to work through elements of my life that I was not ready to talk about myself. I believe that Emil(y) is Irish because my own family, on the maternal side, had branched into Ireland from Scotland by the time Emil(y) would have been born. On my mother's side, the family is further traced back to Scotland, moving to Ireland, moving to Somerset, England, then to Canada, then to the US. I imagine I could write about an alter-ego existing in the various time periods in any one of these places;)...
I admire individuals who have the courage to live in a way that is authentic to their values even if it sets them apart from what might be considered socially 'safe'. I am striving to re-invigorate that ability within myself, having been scared out of it. Was this ever a struggle for you? How would you deal with aspersions about 'living in a fantasy world'- which feels integral to making art, yet is much discouraged?
Yes, of course living authentically is always a struggle. Do you know the quote by poet e. e. cummings: "To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting."? This is of course true, as you have found. But what is next for you is the realization that he only think scarier than being yourself is not being yourself. I have only three rules to live by: Be kind, harm no one, and help others whenever I am able. I can do whatever I like as long as I am hurting no one else, and as long as I am always kind, and think of others. If I've done that, then who could mind what I do or think? And if they do, what do I care? If you are kind, if you consider others, if you harm none, there is no reason why you should not live and create in any way you like, and I sincerely hope that you do:). I believe in you.
I have another question (sorry there's so many)! Why aren't Joanna, Christelle, and Flee in the ebook? Do you plan to have them in the musical? I miss the familiar faces!
Characters have been both added and removed to make the book a new, more concise, and more exciting read, and also to make it a technically better literary work, but I love all the versions of the story, and also love that every edition offers something different:)!
Miss Emilie, I recently acquired the hardcover edition of your book a few months ago after months of saving up and I was wondering if I could join the striped stocking society without the Ebook as there is unfortunately no way I might be able to get my hands on it. My other question, Miss, is how you get your inspiration for all your fabulous creations, your clothes in particular? I absolutely adore your creativity :)
Hello darling!! Please email [email protected] and present your SSS question to the Asylum Ambassadrice - she will be delighted to help you:). Thank you for your very kind words. I find that, if you live with curiosity and eyes wide open, you will never lack creativity, for everything you see, hear, and taste becomes inspiration. All my love, and thank you for having the hardcover—it is very special indeed;).

Affordable SMS Solutions for Sending OTPs
Unlocking Cost-Effective Security: Mastering SMS OTP Delivery
In today's digital landscape, securing user accounts with robust two-factor authentication (2FA) methods is more crucial than ever. One of the most popular and cost-effective ways to implement 2FA is through SMS-based One-Time Passwords (OTPs). This method offers a balance between security and affordability, making it accessible for businesses of all sizes.
Using SMS to send OTPs is straightforward and convenient for users. When a user attempts to log in, the system generates a unique code and sends it instantly via SMS to their registered mobile number. The user then enters this code to verify their identity, adding an extra layer of security beyond just passwords.
Choosing the Right SMS Provider for Budget-Friendly OTP Delivery
To ensure affordability, selecting the right SMS gateway provider is essential. Many providers offer scalable plans tailored for small to medium-sized businesses, allowing you to pay only for the messages you send. Look for providers that offer bulk messaging discounts, reliable delivery rates, and easy integration options.
For instance, affordable sms otps is a popular choice for businesses seeking low-cost security solutions. Their platform provides competitive pricing, extensive coverage, and user-friendly APIs, making it simple to integrate SMS OTP functionality into your existing systems.
Implementing SMS OTPs on a Budget
Implementing SMS OTPs without breaking the bank involves a few key steps:
API Integration: Use a reliable API that offers affordable rates and straightforward integration. Most providers provide comprehensive documentation and support.
Optimize Message Sending: Avoid unnecessary repeated messages. Send OTPs only when needed, such as during login, registration, or sensitive transactions.
Manage User Data Responsibly: Ensure secure storage and handling of user mobile numbers to maintain trust and comply with privacy regulations.
Leverage Bulk Messaging: For businesses with high volume, bulk messaging services reduce costs per message and simplify management.
Enhancing Security While Maintaining Affordability
While SMS OTPs are cost-effective, they are not immune to vulnerabilities like SIM swapping or interception. To bolster security without significant costs, consider combining SMS OTPs with other methods such as email verification or biometric authentication.
Regularly monitor your SMS delivery success rates and adjust your provider or messaging strategies accordingly. Ensuring high delivery success minimizes user frustration and enhances security effectiveness.
Conclusion: Cost-Effective Security Is Within Reach
Implementing SMS-based OTPs doesn't have to be expensive. By choosing the right provider, optimizing your messaging strategy, and integrating additional security layers when necessary, you can safeguard your user accounts efficiently and affordably. For businesses seeking a reliable yet low-cost solution, exploring affordable sms otps is an excellent starting point to enhance security without overspending.

The Ultimate 2025 Playbook for Free Bigo Live Diamonds: From Beginner to Pro
Tumblr media
Stop worrying about your diamond balance. You can become diamond-rich on Bigo Live without spending a dime—all you need is the right strategy. This guide will walk you through every level, from simple daily gains to advanced techniques that leverage your influence for massive rewards.
Phase 1: The Foundation - Consistent, Zero-Cost Gains (Beginner)
This is the most reliable source of diamonds and is perfect for every user. The key to success here is consistency.
Make Daily Logins a Habit: Treat logging into Bigo Live every day as a fundamental task. The "Daily Rewards" feature consistently provides 5-20 diamonds. While it may seem small, these gains add up, especially with streak bonuses and special event multipliers.
Complete Effortless Tasks: Keep an eye on the in-app task center. Many missions are incredibly simple, such as "Watch a stream for 10 minutes" or "Engage in a live broadcast." Completing them is the easiest way to convert your daily activity directly into dozens of diamonds.
Phase 2: The Next Level - Active Participation for High Returns (Intermediate)
Once you're comfortable with the platform, you can unlock greater rewards through deeper engagement.
Become an Event Hunter: Always check the event banners on the homepage. Bigo Live frequently hosts limited-time quizzes, themed challenges, and holiday festivities. These events are not only engaging but also highly rewarding, often offering hundreds of diamonds for participation.
Find Opportunities Within the Community:
Talent Competitions: If you have a skill, don't hesitate to enter official contests like "Bigo's Most Talented." It's your chance to win huge diamond prizes and cash, and dramatically boost your visibility.
Vote and Win: During major events like the Bigo Awards, actively vote for your favorite creators. Bigo often runs diamond lotteries or airdrops for viewers who participate in voting.
Follow Social Media: Bigo Live's official Instagram and TikTok accounts are hidden treasure troves. They regularly host creative contests and share-to-win campaigns, giving you a chance to earn diamonds with just a few clicks.
Phase 3: The Pro Game - Maximizing the Value of Your Influence (Advanced)
This is the most efficient way to earn diamonds, ideal for users who excel at networking and content creation.
Leverage Your Network with Referrals: Your social circle is a diamond mine. Use your unique referral link to invite friends to Bigo. For each successful sign-up, you’ll earn 50-200 diamonds. Using a third-party platform like TOPUPlive for referrals can sometimes unlock even more bonuses.
Become a Contracted Host: If you aspire to be a popular streamer, consider signing a contract with Bigo Live or one of its official agencies. Contracted hosts receive a base salary plus substantial diamond bonuses for meeting streaming hours and engagement targets.
The Golden Rule: Stay Smart, Stay Safe
Warning: Any website, tool, or app claiming to be a "free diamond generator" or "hack" is a scam. Legitimate methods will never ask for your password or require you to download suspicious files. Protect your account by avoiding these traps, as they can lead to data theft and a permanent ban.
Your Core Strategy Summarized:
Be Consistent: Log in daily to accumulate a steady stream of diamonds.
Be Active: Invest your time in events and challenges for bigger payouts.
Be Social: Use referrals to turn your influence into rewards.
Be Vigilant: Recognize and avoid scams to keep your account secure.

The biggest financial market in the world is at your fingertips. With a registered account, you may buy and sell currencies for profit. The broker is your middleman providing access, tools, and support. It also processes all financial transactions, so finding a reliable company is crucial. It is one of the crucial decisions for a trader. Whatever the strategy, if the intermediary is dishonest, your hard work will be futile. These top Forex brokers in Indonesia offer excellent support and free education. Here are their biggest strengths. Official Licensing Steer clear of brokers without an official license. Authorized companies comply with crucial industry norms, such as negative balance protection. Even with a failed strategy, you will never owe the broker any money. As many instruments are traded on margin (i.e., with the use of borrowed funds), this measure is vital. They may be authorized by one or more organizations and jurisdictions. Common examples are the CySEC in Cyprus and the FCA in the United Kingdom. Licensing is mandatory regardless of local Forex laws. Demo Trading Another sign of a reliable broker is the opportunity to test its software for free. Usually, you need to fill in a simple form to get a login and password. These are emailed to you immediately so you can enter them on the terminal. The credentials will unlock the system in a special training mode. All the features are usable, but no real deposits or withdrawals are possible. The point is to practice with a virtual balance. You may explore this system at your own pace before risking any capital. With distinguished brokers, demos are always free and unlimited. Mix of Markets Today, a Forex broker does not limit its offerings to currencies. In addition to dozens of Majors, Minors, and Exotics, you may trade precious metals, stocks, and derivatives like CFDs. For traders, this translates into easy portfolio assembly. To limit risks and maximize gains, they may diversify exposure, engaging increasingly more instruments. Low Minimum Deposit While demos are absolutely free, the real market is cheap to enter. Some brokers allow you to begin with $10. The opportunity to start small is invaluable, as novices limit their risks. Modest capital does not allow high profits from the get-go, but it protects you from excessive losses while you are still gaining experience. Flexible Software The best software for currency traders ensures flexible access. You may use desktop software, mobile apps, or web-based systems that open directly inside browsers. Switch between devices easily, as all of them connect to the same cloud-based servers. Top brokers may offer proprietary software or stick to universal systems like MetaTrader 5. Your Perfect Intermediary Unscrupulous brokers deceive their clients to seize their deposits. Be extra careful when searching for a provider. Choose only regulated brands with a positive reputation. Generally, global brokers have a competitive edge, as they cater to a vast audience.

Deadbolt Door Lock: The Ultimate Security Upgrade for Your Home & Business!
Tumblr media
Protecting your office or commercial location is just as crucial as residential security. Installing an electronic deadbolt door lock is necessary to increase security. Better control and convenience are provided by its state-of-the-art features, which include keyless entry, remote access, and real-time monitoring.
Installing a digital tiny door lock or fingerprint smart lock can reduce unauthorised access, and its user-friendly features make it simple to reprogram if a password or PIN issue occurs. This simplicity of use reduces the need for costly lock replacements.
Additionally, a contemporary deadbolt lock provides total safety and facilitates quick response in the case of a security breach by integrating with security systems. In addition to safeguarding confidential information and things that are important, integrating automated deadbolts increases worker safety.
Advantages of Implementing an Innovative Security Deadbolt from a Qualified Supplier:
Installing a high-quality lock from reliable Australian suppliers and manufacturers in your area has several benefits. Premium deadbolts increase the building's overall security and provide greater resistance to attackers when they attempt to break in by drilling, using the wrong PIN above certain access restrictions, or employing forced entrance.
Modern security lock supply from a reliable manufacturer provides high-quality solutions with consistent performance and longevity. The likelihood of failure or malfunction is reduced by modern technology and technological know-how. Reputable Australian suppliers also abide by regional security regulations. They guarantee that the deadbolts follow strict safety guidelines.
Finally, buying high-quality deadbolts from reliable manufacturers and suppliers includes several important features that ensure excellent security and convenience for your home or place of work.
Usually, these advanced deadbolts can remotely create and send eKeys and PIN codes to numerous management staff members simultaneously. This flexibility reduces the possibility of an unauthorised entrance by making it easy to keep data private with whoever the e-key is shared with, as employees are in charge of protecting the confidentiality of the PINs.
The inclusion of Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity allows owners to monitor and control the lock from a distance, getting real-time information on attendance and unlocking history.
Overall, whether buying online or in person, people should choose a reliable supplier that provides quick and efficient customer service, installation support, and easy access to replacement parts in case needed.

How to fix Microsoft 365 portal login issues?
If you've been struggling with accessing your microsoft365 portal login, you're not alone. Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) is a widely-used cloud-based suite that includes apps like Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and OneDrive. However, login issues with the Microsoft 365 portal can be frustrating and disruptive—especially when you need immediate access to your email or documents.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through the most common causes of Microsoft 365 portal login problems and how to fix them step by step. Whether you're a student, professional, or IT admin, these troubleshooting tips will help you resolve login issues quickly and efficiently.
Why Microsoft 365 Portal Login Issues Happen
Before diving into fixes, it's important to understand the possible causes behind microsoft365 portal login errors. Here are some of the most frequent culprits:
Incorrect username or password
Expired or locked account
Browser-related problems (cookies/cache)
Two-factor authentication (2FA) issues
Network or DNS configuration problems
Incorrect login URL
Licensing or subscription expiration
Firewall or antivirus restrictions
Understanding the root cause will help you apply the right solution faster.
1. Verify the Correct Microsoft 365 Login URL
A surprisingly common mistake is trying to log in from an incorrect or outdated URL. To access Microsoft 365 services, always use the official login portal:
From there, click on "Sign in" and enter your Microsoft credentials.
Using any third-party or unofficial site could not only cause login errors but also put your account at risk.
2. Check Your Username and Password
This might sound basic, but it's often the first hurdle. Ensure that:
You’re using the correct email address associated with your Microsoft 365 account.
The password is typed correctly, considering case sensitivity.
Caps Lock is off on your keyboard.
If you’re unsure about your credentials:
Click “Forgot my password” on the sign-in screen to reset it.
Contact your admin (if you're part of a school or organization).
3. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies
Outdated cookies or corrupted cache can interfere with your microsoft365 portal login. Follow these steps to clear them:
For Google Chrome:
Click the three-dot menu > Settings
Navigate to Privacy and security
Click Clear browsing data
Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files
Hit Clear data
After clearing, restart the browser and try logging in again.
4. Try a Different Browser or Use Incognito Mode
Sometimes, browser extensions or settings can block access to the Microsoft 365 portal. Try:
Using a different browser (e.g., Firefox, Edge, Safari)
Opening your browser in incognito/private mode
This will bypass stored cookies and extensions, offering a clean slate for login.
5. Resolve Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Problems
If your account is secured with 2FA or multi-factor authentication, make sure:
Your authenticator app (like Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator) is installed and up-to-date
You’re receiving the authentication code
Your phone or backup email is accessible
If you’ve lost access to your 2FA method, you’ll need to contact your organization’s IT support or Microsoft support to regain access.
6. Check for Account Lock or Suspension
Multiple failed login attempts can trigger an account lock. Additionally, inactive accounts or suspicious activity may cause Microsoft to suspend access.
Here’s how to check:
Try signing in from another device or browser
Visit the Microsoft account recovery page: https://account.live.com/password/reset
If you receive a message like “Your account is locked,” follow the instructions provided to unlock it. In business environments, you may need to ask your admin to unlock your account.
7. Inspect Network and DNS Settings
In some cases, incorrect DNS settings or a weak network connection can block access to Microsoft services.
Fix Suggestions:
Restart your modem/router
Connect to a different Wi-Fi or use mobile data
Change DNS settings to Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)
Disable VPN temporarily to rule out interference
If you're on a corporate network, consult your IT team to check for firewall restrictions.
8. Ensure Your Microsoft 365 Subscription is Active
An expired Microsoft 365 subscription can prevent you from logging into the portal or using apps.
To check:
Go to Microsoft account
Click Services & subscriptions
Verify that your Microsoft 365 license is active
If expired, you’ll need to renew the subscription or update payment details to regain access.
9. Disable Conflicting Extensions or Firewalls
Some antivirus programs and browser extensions can conflict with the login process. Try disabling:
Ad-blockers
Privacy extensions like Ghostery or DuckDuckGo
Third-party firewalls or antivirus (temporarily)
After disabling, attempt the login again. If successful, whitelist portal.office.com to prevent future issues.
10. Update Your Browser and Operating System
Running an outdated browser can lead to compatibility issues with modern web apps like Microsoft 365.
Make sure you’re using the latest version of:
Google Chrome
Microsoft Edge
Mozilla Firefox
Safari (for macOS users)
Also, ensure your operating system is up to date with the latest patches and security updates.
11. Reset Your Password Using Account Recovery
If you suspect someone has tampered with your account, resetting your password is the best course of action.
Follow these steps:
Go to https://account.live.com/password/reset
Select “I forgot my password”
Follow the verification process
Set a new secure password
Make sure the new password meets Microsoft’s security requirements.
12. Contact Microsoft Support
If none of the above steps resolve your login issue, your last resort is contacting Microsoft Support.
Visit: Microsoft account
Choose “Contact Support”
Use live chat or request a callback
Provide them with all relevant details, including your account email, error messages, and the steps you've already tried.
Tips to Avoid Microsoft365 Portal Login Issues in the Future
Use a password manager to store complex passwords securely.
Enable 2FA and keep backup methods updated.
Bookmark the correct login URL: portal.office.com
Check login activity regularly for suspicious access.
Renew subscriptions on time to avoid disruptions.
